Applicator's Qualifications: Company specializing in performing work of this Section approved by manufacturer for application, with 3 years minimum experience and 5 successful chemically stained concrete projects. 1.4 MOCK-UP A. General: 1. Use materials, fabrication and installation methods identical with those indicated for Work. Simulate actual construction conditions as accurately as possible. 2. Approval: a. Obtain Architect’s written approval for each mock-up. b. Do not start production of materials for final Project site erection until Architect’s approval of mock-up has been obtained. c. Approved mock-up will serve as standard of quality and workmanship of Work; maintain mock-up until completion of relevant Work. B. Locate mock-up on site in location as directed. C. Provide up to one 3-foot square mock-up poured at same time and finished in same manner as concrete slabs for use as color mock-ups. Maintain approved mock-up as standard for work of the Section. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Comply with requirements of Section 01600. B. Store products above 50 degrees F, but no greater than 85 degrees F, unless otherwise recommended by manufacturer. 1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Do not apply materials when ambient or substrate surface temperatures are below 40 degrees F or higher than 100 degrees F. B. Do not apply during inclement weather or when forecasted conditions will not permit compliance with manufacturer's printed instructions. C. Provide mechanical ventilation during and after application to dissipate fumes if natural ventilation is insufficient. 1.7 SCHEDULING A. Schedule application of products at proper time intervals after concrete finishing and curing operations. B. Maintain proper moisture content of concrete before, during, and after application of specified products. 1.8 MAINTENANCE MATERIALS A. Provide one container of clear sealer with instructions for interior maintenance use. Obtain receipt. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS A. Provide materials, equipment, and personnel required to achieve specified finish. B. Colored Chemical Stain: Scofield, LITHOCHROME Chemstain, acidic water-based solution of metallic salts. C. Clear Sealer: Scofield, 1 coat of CEMENTONE Clear Sealer, water based, low gloss and two coats of Clear Coat sealer. D. Protective Wet Cure Paper: “Transguard 4000” or approved; reinforced 2 ply laminated kraft paper. F. Joint Sealant: Traffic bearing urethane sealant as specified in Section 07920; color to match stained concrete. 2.2 FINISHES A. Base coat stain color. B. Topcoat stain color. C. Colors: Architects choice from standard color chart. D. Sealer: Clear. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine conditions and proceed with work in accordance with Section 01310. B. Ensure concrete has cured for sufficient amount of time and has no curing compounds which would inhibit stain penetration of the bonding of fill materials. C. Verify that damage and defects in concrete surface have been repaired as specified in Section 03300 and accepted by Architect. D. Verify that form ties have been broken off below concrete surface and plastic cones, fins and burrs have been removed. E. Verify that form tie holes have been patched, unless specifically indicated to be left unfilled. F. Verify that surfaces are clean, dry, dust free, and free of efflorescence, oil or other matter detrimental to stain application. G. Ensure concrete has cured for time period required by manufacturer of product to be applied before application of products. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Provide protection as necessary to protect adjacent materials and surfaces from dirt, dust, and other surface or physical damage. B. Prevent migration of airborne materials by use of tarpaulins, windbreaks, and similar containment devices. C. Maintain control of concrete chips, dust and debris. Collect water to prevent damage to adjacent surfaces. D. Remove loose particles and foreign matter by method, which will not affect stain application. E. Prepare surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's directions. F. Provide protection as necessary to protect adjacent materials and surfaces from dirt, dust, spillage, overspray and other surface or physical damage. 3.3 APPLICATION A. Stain Color Separation Lines: Where one stain color is separated from another stain color in the field of the area to be stained, saw cut the structural slab to a depth of 1/4 inch to establish a uniform straight line to terminate each application of stain color. Clean floor of all dust and debris caused by saw cutting operations. B. Protect adjacent surfaces not indicated to receive stain and to separate different stain colors during application. This is especially critical, and may require special methods to prevent stain seepage into adjacent materials. Masking of adjacent tile surfaces has not prevented stain absorption into adjacent tile on previous projects. C. Apply concrete stain in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions to match the approved mock-ups. Do not use squeegees or rollers. D. Apply stain in number of coats indicated to match the mock-up. E. Review each successive stain application with the Architect prior to proceeding with the next step. 3.4 SEALER AND PROTECTIVE COATING A. Sealer: Install three coats of sealer in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not apply coats too heavily in order to prevent a milky appearance. B. Protective Coating: Apply in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Verify with the Architect prior to application. 3.5 CURING A. Maintain uncovered for minimum 24 hours. B. Apply protective cover after sealer has dried. 3.6 CLEANING A. Clean up and remove debris daily. B. Clean spillage, over spray, or drift from adjacent surfaces; remove immediately in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 3.7 PROTECTION A. Protect finished work in accordance with Section 01310. B. Protect finished concrete surfaces from damage by construction equipment, operations and from adverse weather conditions. 1. Areas subject only to foot traffic: Lay down Transguard 4000 or protective covering paper, lapped and sealed at joints and edges with Nashua Brand duct tape. 2. Areas subject to rolling trucks, dollies and other equipment: In addition to the above, such areas shall be further protected by continuous masonite board runways. Coordinate designation of such areas. C. Remove protective covering paper when directed. END OF SECTION |
